About Asset Narrative

About Asset Narrative: The Story Behind the Data.

Most people see an asset as a static object, a boiler, a bridge, or a streetlight. I see a narrative. I see a story of past decisions, current risks, and future potential.

My name is Bryn Turner, and I am a practitioner dedicated to unpicking the complexities of the UK infrastructure landscape. My goal with Asset Narrative is simple: to bridge the gap between “dirty-fingernail” operational reality and high-level strategic wisdom.

The Journey: From the Shop Floor to the Boardroom

My perspective wasn’t formed in a vacuum or a classroom. It was built through a varied, 20-year career that has spanned manufacturing, fabrication, hospitality, and the public sector.

These diverse environments taught me a singular truth: Information is the lifeblood of performance. Whether it’s a fabrication error or a digital mapping error in a large estate, the problems are rarely just mechanical, they are almost always failures of the “narrative” or the data that supports it.

Professional Standards: Validated Expertise

While I believe in the power of “real-world” experience, I also believe that expertise must be validated by global standards.

I am proud to hold the Institute of Asset Management (IAM) Diploma with Distinction.

This credential represents the “Gold Standard” in the industry, certifying a deep understanding of:

  • Strategic Asset Management Plans (SAMP)
  • ISO 55000/1 Standards and Implementation
  • Lifecycle Costing and Risk Management
  • Information Management (ISO 19650)

Achieving a Distinction signifies a commitment to the highest level of professional rigor. It ensures that the insights I share on Asset Narrative are not just observations, they are frameworks aligned with best practices and UK legislative mandates like the Climate Change Act and Net Zero 2050.

The “Asset Sleuth” Methodology

In an era increasingly dominated by AI and Large Language Models, I focus on “Ground Truth.” AI can explain a theory, but it cannot walk a site, unpick a 100-year-old legal deed, or understand the nuance of a local team’s “gut feel”.

I use a methodology I call The Asset Sleuth:

  1. Investigate: Finding the “Ghost in the Machine” (the data gaps).
  2. Validate: Applying the DIKW Pyramid (Data, Information, Knowledge, Wisdom) to ensure truth.
  3. Implement: Using the Holy Trinity of Asset Management (Cost, Risk, and Performance) to drive results.

Why Asset Narrative?

This site is a resource for professionals who are tired of generic management theory. Whether you are reading my Asset Management 101 roadmap, diving into a technical Deep Dive, or following a Day in the Life case study, you are getting a practitioner’s view of how to steward the assets that support our communities.
